Publish open access for free

SOAS has agreements with several major publishers which means you may be able to publish your article Open Access at no extra cost.

To be eligible you must be 

  • a member of staff on an academic, research or teaching contract, Emeritus staff, a current PhD student or a PhD student who has obtained their award during the last year
  • the corresponding author and in the article submission process you should identify yourself as affiliated with SOAS and use your SOAS email address
  • SOAS requires a CC BY licence for all publications
  • authors must deposit their Accepted Manuscript in SOAS Research Online

Major publishers agreements

Wiley

  • SOAS corresponding authors can publish Open Access at no extra cost by using the OnlineOpen option for hybrid journals (hybrid journals are a mixture of traditional subscription-based publishing and Open Access), or in fully Open Access journals.
  • Once your article has been accepted in a hybrid journal, log in to Wiley Author Services, click 'Select OnlineOpen', choose SOAS as your affiliation, and provide details of any relevant funding. Then confirm that you would like to make your article Open Access. The request will be forwarded to the Scholarly Communications Team.
  • If you are publishing in a fully Open Access journal, select SOAS as your institution when you submit.
  • SOAS will only approve original research and review articles. Other types of submission such as book reviews will not be approved.
  • SOAS requires a CC BY licence for all publications.

Sage

  • SOAS corresponding authors can publish Open Access at no extra cost in over 900 hybrid journals (hybrid journals are a mixture of traditional subscription-based publishing and Open Access).
  • There is a 20% discount when publishing in fully Open Access journals.
  • The discount applies to original research articles and review articles, other types of submission such as book reviews are not covered.
  • When you submit, ensure that you use your SOAS email address and identify yourself as affiliated with SOAS. This will enable Sage to identify your paper as eligible for this deal.
  • Sage will inform all co-authors that the article can be published Open Access at no additional cost. Within 14 days, one author must confirm that the authors agree to publish Open Access, and select a licence.
  • SOAS requires a CC BY licence for all publications.
  • There is no limit on number of articles published during the period of the deal.

Brill

  • SOAS corresponding authors can publish original research articles and review articles Open Access in any Brill journal at no extra cost.
  • Authors must use their SOAS email address when submitting articles.
  • When submitting your article through your Brill contact, request to publish Open Access and indicate that you are an author affiliated with one of the eligible institutions.
  • If you submit your article through Editorial Manager, you will be asked during the submission process whether you are eligible for the agreement.
  • Articles will be published under a CC BY licence.

Elsevier

  • SOAS corresponding authors can publish open access in over 1,800 of the publisher’s subscription (hybrid) journals at no cost.
  • The agreement also provides a 15% reduction on publishing in Elsevier’s fully open access journals (Gold Open Access).
  • When you upload your manuscript please use your SOAS email address and SOAS affiliation.
  • Elsevier will contact the corresponding author to offer the open access option and complete the publishing form as part of the 'post-acceptance author journey'. Please select the CC BY open access licence where available.
  • Elsevier journals participating in the agreement

Cambridge University Press

  • SOAS corresponding authors can publish Open Access articles in gold and hybrid journals at no extra cost.
  • Authors must use their SOAS email address when submitting articles.
  • Eligible article types are research articles, review articles and rapid communications, brief reports and case reports (click here for definitions).
  • This covers articles accepted for publication from 1 January 2021

  • SOAS corresponding authors can publish Open Access articles in Open Select (hybrid) journals and fully open access journals at no extra cost.
  • Authors must use their SOAS email address when submitting articles.
  • Your paper must be an original research article. Other types of paper, such as Editorials, Announcements, and Book Reviews, are not covered by this agreement.
  • This covers articles accepted for publication from 1 January 2021

Oxford University Press

  • Authors from SOAS can request the use of funds to pay their Open Access charge when arranging payment in OUP’s online licensing and payment system. 
  • The agreement allows SOAS corresponding authors to publish research and review articles 'gold' open access in over 400 hybrid and fully open access journals. Authors must use their SOAS email address when submitting articles to the journal and indicate SOAS as the primary affiliation. 
  • Authors must choose the CC BY publication licence. OUP will ask the author to select ‘UK Institutions (Jisc affiliated)’ when completing the online licensing/payment process. 
  • Book reviews and articles published in supplements are not eligible.
