This module provides detailed analysis of company financial accounts and reports. It starts by introducing students to the different elements of financial accounts and in each case provides critical analysis of the purpose of the various accounts and reports, the main concepts and measures contained in the accounts and the underlying methodology used to construct the accounts.

The Business Law module provides a basic overview of key principles of business law from a common-law perspective and not only equips students with a good understanding of these principles in its own right but also provides a useful foundation for those students who choose, after completing their BSc, to go on to take a law-related Masters programme.

And you will be introduced to the art and skill of interpretation.

This module introduces students to key development theories and approaches. How have processes of transformation and change, ideas about progress, and the policy and practice of development unfolded around the world, over time? We consider major shifts in approaches to 'development', from colonial intervention, modernisation, dependency theory and developmentalism, to neoliberalism. Feminist contributions, participatory and decolonial approaches and post-development perspectives are also explored. 

What are the key contemporary issues in development? It aims to deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of more advanced concepts in management accounting and their use in planning, decision-making and control within business organisations.

The topics covered in the specification aim to provide students with solid background in financial accounting and prepare them adequately for further studies in accounting, such as ACCA and CPA professional qualifications.

This module addresses issues relating to the financing of private and public companies. Corporate Finance links accounting to financing by evaluating both the asset and liabilities sides of the balance sheet. In line with this, this module starts with a gentle examination of the four fundamental decisions of a financial manager - capital structure, investing, liquidity and dividend decisions. A detailed examination of each of the decisions follows with emphasis on sources of finance, the evaluation of investment projects, working capital management as well as the risk and return associated with corporate financing and investing. The module takes a mathematical approach and therefore aims to build the analytical skills of students.

This module provides understanding of FinTech and its application in accountancy and audit. Through the vast number of case studies and theories, students will be able to grasp the main points of FinTech and its impact on today’s accounting and finance function.

This module provides a critical and pluralist analysis of macroeconomic phenomena, such as inflation, unemployment, economic growth and productivity. Particular attention is paid to how these phenomena have been analysed by different schools of macroeconomic thought, but also how they interact with the ecosystem and how this interaction differs between the Global North and the Global South. The discussion of green macroeconomic policies and strategies are at the core of the module. The module also focuses on how the macroeconomy is interconnected with the financial system, both in general and in the context of the climate crisis.

It also discusses topics in international trade such as the effects of trade on income distribution and poverty, the debate about import substitution and trade protection, and alternative approaches to trade policy. Moreover, it analyses drivers of international factor movements, foreign direct investment, and the role of multinational corporations.

While the foundations of the course are concepts developed in economics, they will be combined with (and challenged by) insights from strategy, international finance, marketing, human resource management, and other areas. The final aim of the course is to provide you with a critical understanding of whether and to what extent the ways economists have studied and modeled firms’ internationalization decisions offer any support in real world decision making.

This module introduces students to the basic principles of economic analysis and decision sciences. It applies economic theory and decision sciences to business and management decision making.

International marketing plays a key role in constructing and communicating the value of an idea, experience, brand or product to the markets and wider audience in wider global contexts. The aim of this module is to provide a theoretically driven set of themes and cases which will provide a foundation for understanding the role international marketing plays in business and society. The module uses case studies to strengthen the subject matter and instil knowledge, intellectual, practical and transferable skills. Case studies will be drawn from the perspective of the specific contexts (China, Korea, Japan, Middle East, Africa). The module also attempts to decentre the perspective from mainly Euro-centric into a more inclusive approach.

The module builds on the quantitative and regression analysis from Year 1 and provides an opportunity to develop and practice these quantitative skills. The skills learned include probability analysis, time-series analysis, the ability to analyse risk with sensitivity analysis, testing data series for patterns, forecasting sales and other variables, causality analysis, even studies and the use of decision trees.

This undergraduate module on Project Management equips students with a foundational understanding of essential techniques and methodologies pivotal in modern project management settings. The curriculum is designed to cover the five key phases of project management: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closure. These phases are explored through the dual lenses of traditional waterfall methodologies and the more adaptive contemporary Agile approach, providing a well-rounded perspective. Incorporating Agile principles, the course emphasizes iterative development, flexibility, and stakeholder collaboration, which are crucial in today’s fast-paced project environments. Additionally, the module introduces the structured and process-driven approach of PRINCE2, covering its themes, principles, and processes. Aligned with PMI standards, the module prepares students for certifications like PMP or CAPM, while also laying the groundwork for potential Agile and PRINCE2 certifications.

Ethics - and the concept of corporate social responsibility - have become of increasing importance in global business. This module introduces students to contemporary issues in the relationship between business and ethics. In the modern world, there is a range of views on how business should relate to society and how managers’ decisions can relate to ethical concerns. And the issues have become more complex as businesses have intensified their international reach, engaging with societies that may have distinct structures, norms, and cultures. Through studying principles of academic thinking about these issues, and working on the problems experienced in actual case studies, students learn how to think through the complex problems of business ethics and consider how ethical principles could influence management decisions. The module is organised around international case studies.

The Independent Study Project or dissertation provides students with the opportunity to complete a substantial piece of work on an approved topic in international management. The exercise of writing the dissertation is designed to give students the skills and experience to work independently and to prepare them for management careers and/or further academic study.

The module extends in a substantial way the knowledge gained in (a) Financial Accounting and (b) Analysing Company Financial Statements courses taken by students in Year 2. The topics covered in the specification aim to provide students with intermediate level knowledge on key financial reporting aspects that are integral to listed corporations and prepare them adequately for further studies in accounting, such as ACCA and ACA professional qualifications. The module emphasises practical applications and demonstration of various international financial reporting (accounting) standards (IFRS) relevant to each topic to be covered. On successful completion of the module, students will be able to practically understand and analyse reporting of intangible assets, financial instruments, recognition and accounting for revenue and earnings, segmental reporting and corporate taxes.

This module examines the issue of taxation both from the personal and corporate levels and introduces students to the administration of the tax system and administration in the UK. Thereafter, the modules looks at the issues relating to the computation of income tax from employment, self-employment and investments.

The module is designed to enable students to learn the nature of financial strategy in market economies and discuss its role within different types of market economies. It aims to teach the main techniques used in the different financial decisions facing firms in formulating financial strategy, to ensure that students can apply them, critically evaluate them, and assess the problems experienced in firms’ use of them.

This module introduces students to the theory and practice of auditing. The module introduces the conceptual framework of audit and relates it to real life examples. The following topics are examined: the regulation of audit, authority to audit and the role of the professions; ethics and independence; auditor's duty and the expectation gap; international auditing standards; the nature of evidence and its application to assertions including the assessment of evidence and audit judgements; the techniques of audit, audit process and audit risk, internal control; the auditors' report and the true and fair view.

The module provides a foundation for students to understand financial markets and financial instruments. The module compares the different models of financial systems observed globally. It covers the types and functions of financial markets; participants in financial markets (including financial institutions and government); and representative financial instruments. It introduces the main elements of financial markets, including the money market, bond market, stock market, and derivatives market. It analyses the features of financial instruments, which correspond to each element of financial markets (bond, equity, futures and options). Real-life cases and events are integrated with the theories and models in teaching financial markets and instruments.

This module is a Year 3 optional module for Economics Undergraduates. It aims at providing students with a thorough understanding of core economic policy challenges in the contemporary global economy, and to equip them with the theoretical and applied skills necessary to evaluate policy debates and challenges and contemplate policy solutions to such challenges.

The module introduces students to a diverse set of theories and methods to explore contemporary issues in the global economy. This is an application-based module, which will allow students to, on the one hand, productively engage on current debates in economics, and, on the other hand, coherently employ concepts and tools that they have learnt so far to study these issues. The module will be geared towards training students to use the economics tools at their disposal to systematically frame the problem and employ a diverse set of methods to analyse them.

This module introduces the basic concepts of corporate governance and theory of the firm. It is specially designed for the undergraduate study of such areas as management, finance, financial law, corporate law, economics and related subjects. The course is designed to increase the depth of your understanding of corporate governance issues. As corporate governance is a multi-disciplinary subject – covering such topics as law, politics, management, finance, and economics - the course outlines the key theoretical and practical issues underpinning the study of corporate governance, and how they affect the governance of the modern corporation. International comparisons and differences in corporate governance are emphasised throughout the course.

This module introduces students to the functioning processes of MENA’s financial sector including banking, enterprise financing, stock markets, bond markets, exchange rates and monetary policy. This course is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of how MENA’s financial institutions work, including the Islamic banking sector and its successes and failures.

Fraud and financial crime are no longer the concern of lawyers and governments. It is now one of the most important compliance areas for any financial institution and knowledge of it is therefore highly important for a career in this sector. It is also an issue of growing importance for policy makers, investigators and prosecutors, for whom expertise in this area opens up specialist career opportunities.

The module therefore provides an overview of the key offences of fraud and financial crime from a legal/regulatory perspective. The lectures will provide detailed synopsis of these crimes from an international perspective, with reference to global standards.

Teaching: 1-hour lecture each week with an accompanying one-hour tutorial the following week. One of these lectures will be given by a practitioner in order to give a practical, real world perspective.  The tutorials will build upon the theoretical study of the lectures and provide practical examples to work through and discuss in smaller group format or provide opportunity for testing the learning of important concepts.

This course consists of a set of core lectures which will introduce students to: (a) economic, political and socio-cultural theories and frameworks for understanding the context of business in the Asia Pacific region; and (b) the application of international business theories and frameworks to understand the decision-making processes of companies investing in the region.

This course builds technically on the second-year module, Econometrics, which is a prerequisite for this module. It also builds conceptually on the two second-year core modules: Microeconomic Analysis and Macroeconomic Analysis. The course is designed to provide students with a hands-on" environment. It aims to help students deepen and broaden their knowledge and understanding of econometric techniques needed for empirical analyses of both cross-sectional household-level data for micromodelling research and time-series data for macro and also financial modelling research. In addition, the course also aims to develop students' abilities in critical evaluation of what is taught in econometrics textbooks."

The objective of this module is to provide students with a firm understanding of what the financial system does and how it is organised. It is designed to examine a broad series of topics, including what a financial instrument is and how it is valued; what a financial market is and how it works; what a financial institution is and how it operates. It equips students with the core principles of finance such as time has value, investors need to be compensated for taking risk and information is the basis for investment decision.

This module provides a critical overview of theoretical, empirical and policy issues relating to international trade and investment. It provides an introduction to the main theories of international trade, including standard neoclassical free trade approaches and more recent theories addressing imperfect competition, economies of scale, national competitiveness issues, and managed trade. It also discusses topics in international trade such as the effects of trade on income distribution and poverty, the debate about import substitution and trade protection, and alternative approaches to trade policy. Moreover, it analyses drivers of international factor movements, foreign direct investment, and the role of multinational corporations.

The objective of this module is to provide students with a firm understanding of financial global markets. The module will focus on topics including the role of finance in economic development, the relevance of different financial system structures, and the European Monetary and Economic Union.

This module is designed to introduce students to the major theoretical approaches and concepts in contemporary Development Economics. Both mainstream and heterodox approaches to Development Economics will be covered. Students will have the opportunity to critically engage with international development policy debates by unpicking the theories, frameworks and methods underpinning these debates. The module will apply theories to contemporary issues in low income countries, relying on a variety of case studies throughout.

The Professional Placement in Economics involves students being placed within an organisation to participate in a specific element of research or practice related to their degree. The aim is that students’ prior and ongoing academic studies will inform and enrich their experience of professional practice, and the exposure to professional practice will in turn enhance their ability to analyse issues relating to Economics, Development Economics and Political Economy. The placement will also provide invaluable experience as students embark on careers after graduating. The Professional Placement in Economics module is offered as an optional module in the final year.

This module provides an introduction to both classical and recent approaches in economic anthropology. Moving away from narrow understandings of economy, it will explore how economic life is embedded in social relations, cultural transformations and political action. This includes vital topics such as money and commodities, the gendering/racialising of labour, cultures of consumption, informal economies, indebtedness and finance. Finally, it will investigate how anthropologists are envisaging the future of economic life and alternatives to neoliberal austerity, and how an engaged anthropology can contribute to shaping alternatives.

It looks at macroeconomic issues, with a particular focus on growth, trade and investment flows, and fluctuations in economic indicators since the middle of the 1990s.

This course is about the economic structures, institutions and policy challenges in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The course starts with a broad economic history of the region and goes on to address the emergence of the economic structures, resource endowments, and political economy institutions of the modern Middle East. The course highlights the specificities of the political economy of the region in a global cotext and covers selected aspects of economic policy in the contemporary period in these countries. The contemporary nature of the problems facing the MENA countries are addressed throughout the course.
