Course aim

This is course at SOAS Language Centre in London aims to provide a continuation for learners who have completed the Intermediate Chinese course. The course is designed to help learners in mastering the Chinese language and boosting the previously acquired language competencies. Students will perfect their knowledge of Chinese grammar and vocabulary and will improve their communication and comprehension skills in Chinese by working with authentic materials and discussing a wide range of social problems. Learners will be able to perform a considerable variety of tasks from conducting a survey and supporting an argument and taking part in a debate on a topical issue. This course is delivered by the Language Centre.

Method

The course is taught in English and Chinese and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and a good balance between understanding the systems of Chinese grammar and vocabulary, developing the skills of comprehending and producing Chinese in speech and writing, guided practice in language usage and use and authentic communicative activities. Class size is limited to fifteen to allow intensive interactive practice with individual feedback and advice on progress.

Entry requirements and progression route

To be able to join Chinese Upper Intermediate you need to have completed the Intermediate level course in Mandarin Chinese at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (approximately 120 hours). The progression route from Chinese Upper Intermediate 1 is to Chinese Upper Intermediate 2; from Upper Intermediate 2 to Upper Intermediate 3. Upon successful completion of Chinese Upper Intermediate 3 you will be able to progress to the Pre-Advanced level course in Chinese Mandarin.
