This module provides an overview of the major contemporary issues in gender and social inequality, which cut across all areas of policy and development practice in both the developed and developing world. The module examines definitions, concepts and theories of sex, gender and identity; it examines the historical emergence and evolution of various types of feminism; and it examines the ways in which gender inequality can be addressed - and sustainable development promoted - through policy and in practice.

This module is at the intersection between feminist/queer and political analysis. It prioritizes critical feminist approaches to knowledge production and feminist and queer interventions in the study of global political and socio-economic processes.

This module offers insight into key issues in the study of gender and conflict in the Middle East. It provides a focus for students interested in women’s studies, feminism, sexuality and gender, while also offering a gendered approach to the study of conflict in the Middle East.

This module provides a foundational overview of the relationships and challenges of climate change and global development. It provides a grounding in the science of climate change and different theories and models of development before critically analysing the potential for low carbon and climate resilient development pathways in the future. It introduces students to a range of climate policies, financing and programming mechanisms across different scales including international agreements, governments, businesses, communities and individuals. The module is aimed at postgraduate students and professionals from different disciplinary and professional backgrounds who want to understand more about the theory and practice of integrated responses to climate change and development challenges. It provides a foundational understanding of natural and social science processes, and of technical and policy issues, from which students can develop more specialised interests and knowledge. Providing a multi-disciplinary approach across physical sciences, economics, political and social science, the module provide students with skills to understand and critically review the central global development challenge of tackling climate change.

Global Diplomacy: Global Citizenship and Advocacy.

This course offers students a broad understanding of a range of issues that the study of global media raise in regard to the changing nature of diplomacy. The course starts by situating the rise of global media within processes of globalization.

This module addresses a crucial element of contemporary Diplomacy and international affairs, the role of digital technologies in practices, processes and language of diplomacy. As such, it will respond to rapidly changing environments for diplomacy and international relations. It will ask whether, how and in which days does the use of digital technologies in public diplomacy, soft power, propaganda, influence and persuasion and link these questions to trends and changes in policies and decision making. In addition, it will adopt a holistic view of processes and practices, considering how both state and non-state actors are using the expanding digital spaces and platforms and what these mean for conventional understanding of diplomacy.

This is a module that examines responses to conflict-related emergencies. At its core is an understanding of the power relations, systems and processes that generate violence, and responses to it. This module provides the skills to analyse humanitarian action, drawing on theories and case studies; these skills are central to effective policymaking and implementation in humanitarian contexts. The history of humanitarian action dates back over a hundred years, however, the nature of war has changed. The war in Ukraine, Sudan, Gaza, Syria and other places has increased the security concerns for humanitarian workers, mass displacement and climate related hazards. The complexity and longevity of the wars challenges how humanitarian principles are applied and the way these emergencies are identified and responded to. This core module focuses on responses to crises relating to war and other forms of violent conflict, and how lives are saved under difficult, complex and sometimes compromising conditions.

This module equips students with a thorough theoretical understanding of development studies, drawing on the key disciplines of sociology and political economy. The module examines the history of thought on development studies, identifying and critiquing the intellectual journey, trends, and policies of orthodox development thinking and practice

The Middle East has long been an area of interstate conflict and an important area for proxy conflict of global great powers as well as regional actors. This module will investigate the Diplomacy and Power politics of key regional and Global actors in the Middle East region and how they leverage these to achieve their national objectives. This module will also engage with key international organisations such as the UN and Arab League. It will focus on the region from the End of the Cold War to the present day.
