This module introduces students to definitions of, and approaches to, sustainable development to enable them to develop a better understanding of the concept and its implications for policy and decision-making. The module critically interrogates the emergence of the concept and explores contradictions and challenges posed by this wide-reaching approach to development. Students are introduced to and encouraged to critically analyse current debates, mainstream approaches and alternatives. Different framings of sustainable development are explored such as justice, equality, ethics and decoloniality. Students will engage with key challenges which are impact the health and well-being of the planet and all its inhabitants such as including; climate change, biodiversity and gender.
