Faith at SOAS

SOAS is not only a centre for the academic study of religions and cultures at the heart of a great world city, it is also a community of people where individuals are free to live out their faith in an open and encouraging environment.

If you need help in finding the nearest place of worship for you, or if you are interested in exploring faith, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with any of the people listed below:

Prayer rooms

There are Prayer Rooms available at both of our Campuses. The prayer rooms in Russell Square are dedicated to Muslims only, split into Room L65 (in the basement) for Male Muslim Prayer and the Brunei Gallery Prayer Room for Female Muslim Prayer.

The SOAS Chaplaincy is located in room B206 (Brunei Gallery, 2nd floor).

Statement from our multi-faith Chaplaincy team

Greetings on behalf of the multi-faith Chaplaincy team.

As your Chaplain, my first responsibility is to pray without ceasing for the protection of all human life on earth, but my focus at this time is on SOAS which includes the leadership team, all staff, students and all of their families.

As a Minister I believe in the words from Psalm 23:4:

4: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

It is my belief that there is a merciful God who will comfort us in our distress and lead us through to still waters. As a multi-faith chaplaincy, we love all people equally and we serve and minister to those of all faiths as well as all those who have no faith tradition or belief in God. As chaplains, we see everyone as a divine gift and priceless, irreplaceable individual.

Our remit is to nurture wellbeing by providing service to the spiritual, religious and emotional needs, inquiry and aspirations of students and staff. We are here for any student or staff member during their time at SOAS.

Please reach out to us at any time,

God bless,

The Late Rev Claudette Douglas
