Dr Charles I-hsin Chen

Dr Chen received his PhD in economics on topic of the privatisation in China from SOAS in 2014. Before joining the Centre of Taiwan Studies as a Research Associate, he once worked as Parliamentary aide, Presidential staff, spokesman of the ruling Kuomintang party, and spokesman of Presidential Office in Taiwan. He is also a postdoctoral fellow in Centre for Rising Powers, POLIS, University of Cambridge. His writings of editorials, columns, commentaries and letters are regularly published on Taiwan and foreign newspapers.

Dr Chen’s research interest covers a wide range of fields, including the privatisation of state-owned enterprises and the economic transition in China, as well as the party politics, domestic economy and the cross-Strait relations in Taiwan. He currently works on South China Sea issues in Cambridge, particularly on the sovereignty disputes and the impact of arbitration on the formation of maritime governance in this region. His PhD thesis is a quantitative research identifying economic and political determinants for the shrinkage of Chinese state sector in the late 1990s and the early 2000s.
