About the speakers
In this talk, Prof John Picton and Dr William Rea discuss their contributions to the recent book Christian Art and African Modernity (John Picton and Nicholas Bridger (eds), Galda Verlag 2020). With particular focus on Christian art in colonial and post-colonial Nigeria, they show how Christianity has proved to be a context in which works of major art-historical significance have been produced in Africa.
John Picton is Emeritus Professor of African Art at SOAS, and a founding member of the School’s Department of History of Art and Archaeology. Prior to SOAS, he worked for the Nigerian government Department of Antiquities (1961-70) and the British Museum (1970-79).
Dr William Rea is Senior Lecturer in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds, and co-ordinating curator of the John Randle Centre in Lagos.
