Abstract

China is Iran’s top trading partner and is currently engaged in a trade war with the USA while the USA attempts to force Iran to give up its nuclear programme by imposing crippling sanctions on Iran. The US sanctions have resulted in a dramatic fall in trade between China and Iran, which dropped nearly 40% in 2019. Whatever China and Iran may say about building up a strategic relationship, they cannot escape the impact of Donald Trump’s change of US policy towards them. This panel discussion will explore how we should understand the triangular relationship among China, Iran and the USA, what each wants out of their relationships and how the third country plays an important role as the other two engage with each other.
