SOAS China Institute Three-Day Course
Stories about China often get top billing in international television news bulletins. Reports usually highlight political or social problems, or tension between China and its rivals. By contrast, Chinese state media seeks to present a positive slant on the news and influence the debate.
This intensive three-day course equips delegates with the critical skills they require to navigate between extremes of interpretation and gain a nuanced appreciation of the processes which shape China’s image.
Participants will hear first hand how television correspondents from the BBC and other outlets pick stories and conduct interviews, often in challenging circumstances.
They will be joined by reporters from the Guardian, the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal - as well as leading academics - to discuss how public opinion on China is influenced by the press and the impact on government policy.
Journalists who have experience of working in China since 2012 will address the topic of censorship. There will also be a discussion of how skirmishes in the information war are continuing online, where satire, memes and high emotion vie for users’ attention.
This course draws together reporters, scholars and analysts with a great deal of insight on the topic, many of whom are working in high profile media roles. Through the use of panel discussions, moderated interviews and dialogue with the audience, this is a rare opportunity to understand the mechanisms which shape international views on China.
