About this event
Join us for an inspiring evening celebrating the work of SOAS’s College of Development, Economics and Finance which brings together the Department of Development Studies, Department of Economics, and the School of Finance and Management.
The event, hosted by Professor Elisa Van Waeyenberge, Dean of the College of Development, Economics and Finance, will feature the latest news and highlights across the departments, followed by a lecture delivered by Professor Naomi Hossain, Development Studies, titled 'What Happened to Civil Society in Development'? The talk will explore some of the implications for the Sustainable Development Goals of the weakening of civic action.
It will draw on the stark recent example of Bangladesh, where apparent development success was not enough to save an increasingly authoritarian government, finally brought down by a mass social uprising led by students. After the talk, Professor Hossain will participate in an audience Q&A.
This will be followed by a drinks reception, where you can engage in conversation with fellow alumni and staff.
