Abstract

The term nuxiaosheng 女小生 refers to the practice of female actress performing male roles in xiqu 戲曲(traditional Chinese theatre). As a leading nuxiaosheng , Mao Weitao 茅威濤 shares her forty-year experiences and performing techniques of cross-gender performance in this intensive, mind-blowing lecture.

Biography

Mao Weitao is a performer of yueju 越劇 (Chinese Yue Opera) who specializes in performing the roles of Sheng生 (young male). She is a a three-time winner of Plum Performance Award, a Chinese equal of Olivier Award for traditional Chinese theatre. Marking 2019 as the fortieth year of her career, Mao has revolutionized yueju and has portrayed a variety of roles. Thus, she innovatively built up her own aesthetics of performance. As the leading artist of Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe, where she also worked as its artistic director for 18 years, she is continuously reconstructing practices of cross-gender performing arts. Designated as Inheritor of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, Mao is also the Vice President of the China Theatre Association.
