Synopsis

Today in the 21st century, "singing" is no longer just a purely musical act. It can represent the pulse of society and put contemporary ideas into practice. To raise awareness about energy issues, we adopted a documentary-style cinematic approach to follow musicians recording an album close to nature.

Eleven Meinong Conversations invites music producer and singer-songwriter Wing Lo to return to his sunny hometown of Meinong, a historic Hakka settlement in Taiwan, and fulfil a ten-year musical dream. Lo transforms a solar-powered wooden guest house into a recording studio to record his dream album in his Hakka mother tongue. The film conveys the passion of Lo’s Hakka music and his love of living life close to nature.

Through eleven seemingly daily conversations with different characters, Lo’s pure and carefree rural childhood, his nostalgia of leaving home, and his loss of a beloved family member, are transformed into timeless, radiant melodies that touch the heart.

This film adopts a documentary-style cinematic approach to capture the making of the first-ever music album to be recorded in Taiwan with solar energy. Under the gaze of the lens, music producer and singer-songwriter Wing Lo embarks on a musical journey to fulfill a lifetime's ambition. Through a series of poignant scenes with musicians, relatives, friends, and even a random stranger, Eleven Meinong Conversations conveys Wing Lo's solid creative background, passion for Hakka music, and deep love of living life close to nature.

Wing 羅文裕 Director's Statement

Using the themes of solar energy and a love for the natural world as the weft and weave of the film, we followed music producer and singer-songwriter Wing Lo back to his hometown in Meinong to fulfill a lifetime's musical ambition. Singing and speaking in his native Hakka mother-tongue, Lo shares the inspiration and process behind creating Taiwan's first solar-powered recording studio, a journey that, though seemingly short, actually took ten years to complete!

While the musicians recorded around the clock, we captured precious fragments of random interactions between people, which were laced together with images of Lo's original songs. We feel that the atmosphere created by our documentary-style cinematic approach beautifully encapsulates the warmth and sincerity of human interactions and the power of music to connect people with nature.
