The SADRC research webinar welcomes Dr Emad Hussein on the topic of "Enforcement of Arbitration Agreements and Arbitral Awards in the Mainland UAE: A basic introduction to the Ground Realities."
This event will feature a discussion on the Enforcement of Arbitration Agreements and Arbitration Awards in the mainland UAE. It will introduce the audience to the legal requirements of valid arbitration agreements and awards as per the Federal Arbitration Law 2018 in the mainland UAE and whether these are at par with the international best practices.
There will also be a discussion of the issues peculiar to the enforcement of arbitration agreements and awards in the mainland UAE owing to the region's culture and traditional view of arbitrations. This discussion will guide practitioners with the necessary checklists of dos and don'ts while arbitrating in the mainland UAE. In conclusion, the discussion will entail a brief snapshot of the statistics on enforcement of arbitral awards in the mainland UAE in the past few years in light of the issues that would be discussed.
About speaker
Dr. Emad Hussein is an international arbitrator, accredited mediator (CEDR, SIMI and IMI), keen academic and expert on disputes in the MENA region.
He has acted as chair, sole arbitrator and co-arbitrator in varied international commercial arbitration cases under ICC, LCIA, SCCA, CRCICA, DIAC, ADCCAC and QICCA rules. He is empanelled as an arbitrator with several international arbitral institutions such as the HKIAC, QICCA, DIAC, CRCICA, SCCA, AAA-ICDR, LCICA and SIAC. He is also an empanelled mediator with the CAO, World Bank.
He is an approved faculty member (AFL) with the CIArb and has trained arbitrators and mediators under the fellowship route in collaboration with the SCCA. He also regularly conducts judicial trainings on ADR in collaboration with the CLDP, UNDP, MOJ of UAE and KSA. Additionally, he is also a Senior Fellow with the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy (SIDRA) and leads research on the advancement of ADR in the MENA region. He is also a member of the advisory board with the LCICA, British University in Dubai and InnovADR in Geneva.
He holds a PhD in international commercial arbitration from the SOAS, University of London, UK, a PhD in Management from ISM, USA, an LLM in international arbitration from the Queen Mary University of London, UK and an LLM in mediation and international commercial dispute resolution from Newcastle University, UK.
