Synopsis:
Taipeilove* is a documentary on the perception of homosexuality in the Taiwanese society. As Taiwan is the first country in Asia that is in the process of legalizing same-sex marriage, the documentary follows activists, politicians and experts in the Taiwanese society who have been fighting for marriage equality and navigating their lives through the hardship of coming-out, reaction of families, abandonment and finding love. Protagonists Sarah, Kevin and David share their intimate stories of growing up and finding their place in a society that has slowly been opening up. Alongside the protagonists, the experts Yu Mei Nu (politician), Victoria Hsu (lawyer), Jennifer Lu (activist), Wayne Lin (activist) add insightful information of the struggle the LGBT* community had to face, who supported them, and what the current political climate regarding same-sex marriage is like. Taipeilove is a vivid, colourful and important testimony of the on-going struggles and progresses in the Taiwanese gay and lesbian society.
Speaker's Bio:
Lucie Liu is a filmmaker and political scientist of Chinese and German descent. After growing up in Munich, she moved to Beijing at the age of seventeen to embrace the other part of her binational identity. This experience had a great impact on her work, her research and later on her film. Her fascination for the visual arts originates in watching and later on acting in theatre plays. She was involved in various theatre productions in Berlin, Frankfurt and Taipei. After finishing her studies in Political Science at the University of Freiburg, she started connecting politics with visual art. Her first documentary taipeilove is exactly that - a visual expression of a society’s fight for equal rights. The intersection of art and politics is the main focus of Lucie Liu’s work. After living and working in Taiwan, Spain, China and Germany, she is currently studying Communication in Social and Economic Contexts at the Berlin University of the Arts.
