Professor Philippe Cullet

The central role that water plays for human life, the environment and economic activities together with the decreasing per capita availability of safe water has ensured that multiple water conflicts have surfaced or increased in recent years. In India, one of the strategies used over the past two decades to address and prevent future conflicts has been the introduction of a variety of new legal instruments. This lecture explores the opportunities and apprehensions fostered by ongoing water law reforms. It examines in particular issues related to water rights, the environment and institutional reforms.

Philippe Cullet is Professor of International and Environmental Law at SOAS and the Director of the Law, Environment and Development Centre (LEDC). He is the author of Water Law, Poverty and Development – Water Law Reforms in India (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2009); Intellectual Property Protection and Sustainable Development (New Delhi: Butterworths/Lexis-Nexis, 2005), and Differential Treatment in International Environmental Law (Aldershot: Ashgate, 2003).
