Retracing Our Steps: A Photographic Journey through the 100 Years of the ROC

The Taipei Representative Office in the UK is cooperating with the Brunei Gallery, SOAS to host the exhibition Retracing Our Steps: A Photographic Journey through the 100 Years of the ROC.

The Republic of China has experienced multifarious changes over its century of existence, and on this, the 100 ^th anniversary of its foundation it seems appropriate to look back to what made the ROC what it is today. The Retracing Our Steps exhibition charts the development of Taiwan over this time. It covers all aspects of the changing lifestyle of the island’s inhabitants, documenting advances and revolutions in politics, law, economy, technology, society and the arts. It also explores the connection between the people and the land, and concepts of tolerance and diversity in both racial and political spheres. In this way, this exhibition provides audiences with both a wide overview of the unique history of Taiwan, and encourages reflection on the development of modernity on the island. The exhibition would be beneficial to those scholars studying Taiwan, as well as providing a valuable introduction to the general public of the modern history of the country.

The Brunei Gallery is dedicated to showing work of and from Africa and Asia, of both a historical and contemporary nature, through a programme of changing exhibitions. This is as part of the Gallery’s aim to present and promote non-western art and culture. The Brunei Gallery is part of the School of Oriental and African Studies (London University), Europe’s leading centre for the study of Asia and Africa.
