Biography

Hassan Hakimian is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Economics. He was previously Director of the London Middle East Institute and a Reader in the Economics Department before retiring from SOAS in September 2019. His research focuses on the MENA region economies, specifically demographic change, labour markets, inclusive growth, economics of the Arab uprisings and economic sanctions. He is the author of Labour Transfer and Economic Development (1990), co-editor of The State and Global Change (2000 with Ziba Moshaver), Trade Policy and Economic Integration in MENA (2003 with Jeff Nugent), Iran and the Global Economy: Petro Populism, Islam and Economic Sanctions (2014 with Parvin Alizadeh), and Environmental Challenges in the MENA Region: The Long Road from Conflict to Cooperation (2019 with Hamid Pouran). He is currently preparing an edited volume as the Routledge Handbook on the Middle East Economy (forthcoming 2021).

Professor Hakimian is a Founding member, member of the Board and a past President of the International Iranian Economic Association (IIEA), a Research Fellow and Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Economic Research Forum (ERF), and Honorary Adviser at the Institute of Middle East Studies, Shanghai International Studies Institute (SISU). He is the Founder and Series Editor for the “Routledge Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa,” which he launched in 2003.
