Biography

Jane Du is a Research Associate at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. 

She has published extensively on economic policy modelling, Chinese agriculture, food security, as well as demographic and labour economics in professional journals including, The China Quarterly, European Review of Economic History, Journal of Policy Modelling, Social Science in China, Applied Economics and Journal of Contemporary China.

She is the single author of Agriculture Transition in China: Domestic and International Perspectives on Technology and Institutional Change, and China’s Labour Market 1950-2050: The Role of Family Planning in Demographic and Income Transitions. Her ongoing research delves into critical areas including China’s food security and trade dependency; the theory of gradualism and shock therapy; and the working mechanisms of fertility-encouraging policies.

She participated in the award-wining project Agricultural Development in the World Periphery: A Global Economic History Approach, which received the prestigious Jaume Vicens Vives Prize by the Spanish Economic History Association. She has also earned accolades including the Best Reviewer award of the “China Goes Global Conference” hosted by the University of Agder Norway; and the China Research Bursary from Universities’ China Committee in London (UCCL).

Dr Du serves as a reviewer for renowned publishing houses including Routledge and Palgrave, as well as esteemed journals such as The China Quarterly, Applied Economics, Journal of Contemporary China, and International Relations of the Asia-Pacific. She has also coordinated a research project on China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) at the University of Macau. She was a lecturer at the School of Management and Finance at SOAS, University of London.
