Biography
Marcelo is a Teaching Fellow and Visiting Lecturer at SOAS Law School. Their research centres on the interplay between contemporary nationality law, citizenship rights and colonial legacies. They have a special interest on the survival of colonial legal logics in Portuguese and British nationality law with a particular interest in former British and Portuguese Asia. They have been engaging in archival work and critical legal redescription through an in-between/hybrid analysis of law and legal statuses. Marcelo has previously been awarded grants from the European Union (EU/ EACEA), the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA). Their working languages are English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and German.
Research interests
Colonial law; race and indigeneity; nationality and citizenship law; British and Portuguese colonial legacies; theory of rights and coloniality.
