Dr Charlotte Horlyck receives grant from the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation

Dr Charlotte Horlyck, Reader in the History of Korean Art and Head of Department of School of Arts at SOAS, has received a 12-month grant from the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation (OKCHF), which commenced in September 2024.

The OKCHF is a South Korean government foundation dedicated to the survey, research, preservation, and utilisation of Korean cultural heritage located overseas.

The project led by Dr Horlyck will investigate Korean artefacts in UK collections that were acquired around the turn of the 20th century by British diplomats, businessmen, and missionaries, many of whom are unknown to most.

This project is a continuation of Dr Horlyck’s previous 12-month research project with the OKCHF that began in December 2022. This year’s project will delve deeper into under-researched collectors of Korean material, exploring their motivations for collecting and their relationships with major British museums and universities.

During this grant period, Dr Jess Son will serve as a postdoctoral researcher, while Mr Mineo Kato who will serve as research assistant. Both are SOAS alumni.
