Professor Volz appointed to new Economic Advisory Network of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has appointed Professor Ulrich Volz, Professor of Economics and Director of the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance, to its new Economic Advisory Network.

As one of the ten core members of the Economic Advisory Network, Professor Volz will advise the leadership of the Ministry on development policy responses to global economic challenges.

The aim of the Economic Advisory Network is to strengthen and expand the BMZ’s economic policy expertise and incorporate research-based recommendations into development policy processes. The Economic Advisory Network will identify economic issues relevant to development policy and develop analyses and recommendations for the strategic direction of German development cooperation and the positioning of the BMZ.

Discussing his appointment, Professor Volz said:

“It’s a great honour to be invited to contribute to the work of the Economic Advisory Network and support the ministry in developing policy responses to the most pressing challenges of our times.”

At the inaugural meeting of the Economic Advisory Network at the BMZ in Berlin, Development Minister Schulze said:

“The world is changing and is facing many mutually reinforcing crises. How can this change be understood, and which innovative and sustainable solutions can break the cycle of crises?

"I am convinced that with sound advice from science we can find better answers in our development policy. I stand for a future-oriented development policy that supports social-ecological economic transformation and crisis management in the BMZ’s partner countries.”

The Economic Advisory Network includes ten economists. Experts from the Global South will also be brought in on specific topics. Board members of the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) also participate in the network.
