Shadwa Zaher is known for her distinguished research that won several awards and recognition.

She has more than 12 years’ experience in labour, and institutional economics’ issues in developing countries, especially the MENA region. Her special focus is on issues of informal economy, health economics and political economy. As a working economist she was part of the research team within the United Nations Development program (UNDP) in Egypt who worked on setting strategies to assist endangered women in Africa and collecting indigenous knowledge on how women adapt under the different aid programs. Her research engagement during her graduate studies were the main reasons she published in distinguished journals-such as Defense and Peace Economics.

Recently in 2023, she has been awarded the Adam Smith Fellowship award under the auspices of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. She is also an award winning of the Civil Society Scholars Award (CSSA). She is currently working on her doctoral thesis that research labour market segmentation along formal and informal employment and its implication to wage differentials in Egypt at SOAS, University of London.
