Biography
Yacob Mulugetta is Professor of Energy and Development Policy at the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP) of University College London.
Yacob is part of the leadership team of the Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) programme, a major UK Government initiative that aims to support investment in sustainable energy and transport systems to meet development priorities.
Yacob has over 25 years of experience in research, teaching, and advisory roles, focusing on the intersection of energy infrastructure, climate and wellbeing. Previously, he held an academic position at the Centre for Environmental Strategy at the University of Surrey. He was also a founding member of the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Ethiopia.
At UNECA, he served as Senior Climate & Energy Specialist from 2010 to 2013, and was instrumental in shaping the Centre’s focus on integrating clean energy into country infrastructure and developmental agenda. He has contributed extensively to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in various capacities, serving as Coordinating Lead Author for the Energy Systems chapter of the Fifth Assessment Report (Working Group III on Mitigation), Lead Author for the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C, and Lead Author for the Sixth Assessment Report (Demand, Services & Social Aspects of Mitigation).
Yacob is Co-Editor in Chief of Climate Policy (CPJ) and a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and The World Academy of Sciences.
