Call for Papers: Imitation or Appropriation? Intermediality in Qing Imperial Art and Culture

Chih-En Chen and Kexin Ma, two PhD students from the Department of History of Art and Archaeology, cordially invite graduate students, early-career researchers, curators, and art practitioners from various disciplines to submit proposals for the 2021 virtual conference “Imitation or Appropriation? Intermediality in Qing Imperial Art and Culture”. The conference is hosted by the East Asia Art & Archaeology Research Seminar (EARS) and will be held virtually via Zoom or Microsoft Teams in May 2021. Establishing “Intermediality in Qing Imperial Art” as the major theme, the conference aims to explore different moments, when intermedial dialogues in the production of artworks at the Qing court led to the creation of innovative art forms, the vigorous practice of cross-media imitation/appropriation, as well as the generation, alternation and loss of meanings.

Successful applicants will be invited to present their papers in live or pre-recorded mode via Zoom or Microsoft Teams during the conference. Dr. Kristina Kleutghen from Washington University in St. Louis and Dr. Lai Yu-Chih from Academia Sinica, Taipei will also join the conference as keynote speakers and share their ideas and findings remotely with a wide range of audience around the world. For details regarding the objectives of the conference and the required application materials, please read the attached CFP by clicking on this link .
