Taught by experts from right across SOAS, this program offers a global perspective on the development of digital technologies and their social, economic and political impact, preparing you to engage critically with the digital world.

While the digital careers of the future are subject to constant change, graduate outcomes may include entrepreneurship, consultancy, policy, advocacy, media and content creation roles or advanced further study.
Through SOAS’s joint degrees system, this degree can be combined with a very wide range of subjects such as law, international relations, politics, East Asian studies or a language. You’ll gain essential skills in analysing how digital tools shape movements, communities, businesses, and the future of work and politics. Practical skills in digital research methods and interactive media will equip you to lead in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Teaching and learning
Contact hours
All full-time undergraduate programmes consist of 120 credits per year, in modules of 30 or 15 credits. They are taught over 10 or 20 weeks. The programme structure shows which modules are compulsory and which optional.
As a rough guide, 1 credit equals approximately 10 hours of work. Most of this will be independent study. Also included are class time, which may include lectures, seminars and other classes. Some subjects may have more class time than others – a typical example of this are language acquisition modules.
Most of our undergraduate modules have a 2-hour lecture or 1-hour lecture and 1-hour seminar or a 2-hour seminar every week. Some, but not all, also have a 1-hour tutorial every week.

- Develop key transferable skills such as real-world analysis, writing and desk-based research
- Hone research skills, including digital research and investigation techniques
- Conceptualise and produce an evidence-based research project
- Introduce links between theories and real-world issues in SOAS regions and formulate basic critiques in respect of digital media and technology
- Enhance and focus criticality in respect of digital media and technology in SOAS regions and strengthen abilities to link theories and real-world issues in SOAS regions
- Make reflexive use of advanced theoretical concepts in relation to real-world issues in the SOAS regions
- Articulate practical applications of digital media/culture and identify innovations
- Ability to formulate precise, detailed analyses of real-world issues relating to digital media and technology in the SOAS regions
- Apply practical skills relating to digital media and technology
- Analyse and respond to a real-time landscape of digital media and technological phenomena
SOAS Library
