Course overview
This course aims to provide you with a basic knowledge of modern Hebrew and focuses on the acquisition of practical communicative skills.
It covers grammar and essential vocabulary allowing you to communicate effectively and confidence in Hebrew on a limited range of topics relating to everyday situations likely to be encountered. As the course progresses, it aims to provide you with further confidence and vocabulary to discuss more complex topics, write and read more challenging texts in the language. This course is delivered by the Language Centre.
Method
The course is taught mostly in Hebrew, English is used only when necessary, with coverage of the four key skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). You will engage in interactive language activities and improvisations of real life situations using Hebrew, as well as participating in group and pair work to practice vocabulary, expressions and grammar structures.
This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the course.

Entry requirements and progression route
For the first stage of Hebrew Beginners (i.e. Beginners 1), no previous knowledge is required. To be able to join Beginners 2 or 3 you should have completed Beginners 1 and 2 respectively at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (15 hours per each sub-level). The progression route from Hebrew Beginners 1 is to Hebrew Beginners 2; from Beginners 2 to Beginners 3.

Structure
Hebrew Beginners 1
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- spell out words
- greet and introduce yourself and others
- say the country you are from and the city you live in.
- say the language(s) that you speak, write and read.
- explain where you are going to or coming from.
- give and request basic information
- express likes and dislikes
- ordering food and drinks
- talking about jobs
- describe your house, objects and places
- use numbers (1-12)
- ask and give the time
- talk about your family and friends
Hebrew Beginners 2
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- describe your house, furniture
- bargain with vendors
- speak about traveling and trips
- use numbers (10-100)
- know the days of the week
- build a schedule of your routine
- talk about things you want, or you like to do
- speak about things you have
- discuss the Kibbutz life versus the modern city life
- shop for groceries
- use colours to describe food
- prepare a presentation about your city/town
Hebrew Beginners 3
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- make recommendations
- talk about immigration and relocation issues
- talk about something that happened in the past
- say what you did yesterday
- use dates for biographies
- specify where things are located
- make comparisons
- identify parts of the body
- describe pains and aches and illness
- shop for clothes
- describe what someone is wearing
- give a presentation about your childhood
