Course overview

This course at SOAS Language Centre in London is for learners who have completed the Pre-Intermediate Japanese level and who wish to communicate in a wider range of situations. The course is suitable for those who have the knowledge of approximately 300 kanji, and who wish to further develop communicative skills in a wider range of contexts with the accent on practical spoken Japanese.

Students completing this course are able to progress to Japanese Upper Intermediate, or B2 level in Common European Framework. For more details please see language proficiency levels CEFR). This course is delivered by the Language Centre.

Method

The course is taught in English and Japanese and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and a good balance between understanding the systems of Japanese grammar and vocabulary, developing the skills of comprehending and producing Japanese in speech and writing, guided practice in language usage and use and authentic communicative activities.

This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

Entry requirements and progression route

To be able to join Japanese Intermediate 1 you should have completed a Japanese Pre-Intermediate course at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (approx. 180 hours). The progression route from Japanese Intermediate 1 is to Japanese Intermediate 2; from Intermediate 2 to Japanese Intermediate 3. Upon successful completion of Intermediate 3 you will be able to progress to the Upper-Intermediate level course in Japanese.

Structure

Japanese Intermediate 1

In this course will:

  • justify actions (e.g. I bought this because it was cheap)
  • use vocabulary for uncertainty
  • express favours, giving and receiving with a formal register
  • explain the purpose of your activity
  • use particle emphasis on your opinion (excluded middle, exhaustive listing, etc)
  • read and write 350 Kanji

Japanese Intermediate 2

In this course you will:

  • express your opinions
  • use more expressive descriptions
  • use general emergency phrases
  • use evaluative vocabulary (e.g. however)
  • use finer time expressions (e.g. just finish)
  • express possibilities and certainties
  • read and write 395 kanji

Japanese Intermediate 3

In this course you will

  • use causatives to express annoyance as well as responsibilities
  • give convincing reasons for your belief
  • use Keigo (honorific and humble) to match your language to the appropriate register
  • read and write 432 kanji
