Scholarship overview
The Department of Development Studies is pleased to offer the Edgar Graham Prize this year.
The prize supports one fully funded PhD Scholarship for students wishing to undertake doctoral research in the area of Development Studies.
The prize aims to support groups that are currently underrepresented in the field of Development Studies, in particular Black (African, Afro-descendant and/or mixed race) students from the UK who wish to undertake a postgraduate (MPhil/PhD) research degree in Development Studies.
One award will be given for 3 years from September 2022.
The award includes tuition fees at the Home/UK Rate and a stipend of £2,500/year. For Home/UK Students only.
Eligible programmes
- Any full-time Economics PhD Programme - see below:
- MPhil/PhD in Development Studies
- MPhil/PhD in International Development
- Part-time or full-time
New applicants only (new admissions, starting in September 2022)
Candidate criteria
- Open to Home/UK Students ONLY
- Any incoming full/part-time student in Development Studies
- Applicants must have applied to the postgraduate research degree (MPhil/PhD) in Development Studies at SOAS by the time of the application to the prize and by the 15 August 2022, 23:59 (UK Local Time)
- If your offer is conidtional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the requirements by 15 August 2022.
- Please note that most scholarships do not over funding or even allow for Pre-Sessionals. Please check the wording of your scholarship offer to see if you are eligible for Pre-Sessional course or whether you need to achieve SOAS direct entry scores by the deadline specified in your scholarship terms and conditions.
Candidate assessment
Candidates will be assessed based on their application to the Prize and academic merit based on the information provided in their application to study by a Selection Panel consisting of three academic members
Scholarship application deadline
- Scholarship applications must be received no later than 23:59 (UK local time) on 15 August 2022.
- In order to be considered for the scholarship, you must have submitted:
o an online application to the Edgar Graham Prize
o a complete online application to the PhD programme in Development Studies - Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.
- Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Apply for the scholarship by 23:59 (UK local time) on 15th August 2022.
You must apply for this scholarship via the online application form.
Notification of results
Successful candidates will be notified by the end of August 2022. If you have not heard from us by then, you should assume that your application was unsuccessful.
