Abstract
This talk is about the many “discourses of discipline” that encircle the issue of “corporal punishment” ( taibatsu ) in Japanese schools and sports. These discourses encompass the ways that people discuss discipline, the patterns of rhetoric about what discipline should be, as well as what discipline signifies. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of the research process that led to writing Discourses of Discipline, and briefly offer an update regarding recent related events in Japan.

Speaker Biography
Aaron L. Miller, MSc, DPHil (Oxon) is a socio-cultural anthropologist who teaches at California State University, East Bay and St. Mary’s College of California. He has also taught at Kyoto University and Waseda University, and has been a visiting scholar at Stanford University. Miller is the author of Discourses of Discipline: An Anthropology of Corporal Punishment in Japan’s Schools and Sports (Institute for East Asian Studies, University of California, Berkeley), a translated version of which will be published in Japanese by Editorial Republica (Kyowakoku) in 2021, as well as many other articles and book chapters about education, sports, culture, power, violence, and social justice.
